Students to Embrace Languages from Across Europe

Hello! Bonjour! Willkommen! ¡Hola! Ciao! Cześć!

Every year, the 26th of September marks the European Day of Languages, and our pupils will be spending the day improving their foreign vocabulary. The teaching of a foreign language is already a part of our curriculum, but this day gives us the opportunity to introduce other languages to students.

In addition to weekly French lessons, students will spend the day learning basic phrases in the chosen language, as well as being taught about the country and its culture.

Mrs Wollington, Principal, said, “It is so important for the children to experience the different languages around the world. The love of learning a new language starts when they are young and can provide a boost to their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.”

It has never been easier to study abroad or work in a different European country, but a lack of language competence often deters people from making the move. There are many valuable and unforgettable experiences to be had by spending time in different European countries, and we believe that language should not be a barrier.

Set up by the Council of Europe, the European Day of Languages has three general objectives:

  1. Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding.
  2. Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered.
  3. Encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, professional needs, purposes of mobility, or pleasure and exchanges.

Being equipped with the ability to speak another language opens doors to lucrative jobs, exquisite culture, and mouth-watering food, and by marking the day at Southwold Primary School, we hope to broaden the horizons of our pupils.
