Hello and a warm welcome from Mrs Holloway & Mrs Palser
Welcome to our Year 2 class page.
Here you will find all the information you may require linked to what will be happening in Ivy Class. We all look after each other in Year 2 and make sure that we are always busy learning with lots of laughter along the way. It is important to us that we support each other in class so that everyone feels valued and special.
Children in Year 2 are expected to come into the classroom independently; our team will ensure children are given help to put their belongings away if needed. Please drop your child off at their classroom door (facing onto the playground) and collect them at the end of the day from their classroom door. It is important that your child arrives on time in the morning (8.45) because once the children are in class they will be given a learning task to complete until register time. The morning learning tasks will encourage vital life skills such as problem solving and team work.
We enjoy daily morning spelling sessions using the Read, Write, Inc scheme and also take part in Guided Reading, Maths and English lessons every morning. Our afternoons involve being creative in art and design, finding out about different topics and also getting physical in PE. We like visiting the Computing suite each week, learning to speak French, experimenting in Science, learning to play musical instruments and singing songs.
What do I need?
Please can all children have their book bag in school every day. Book bags will be kept in children’s draws. Any fruit snacks for playtimes will need to be put on the lunch time trolley. Children will require their PE kit in school every day; if you would like to take it home each Friday for it to be washed please ensure it is back in school on the Monday. Indoor P.E. is Monday afternoon and outdoor P.E. is Thursday afternoon.
Reading in Year 2
In Year 2 we just love to read. We have a coloured book band system, which has a range of books for us to enjoy. All the books involve different characters, settings and plots. It’s really important that we read these books at least three times before changing them with Miss Perkins. We also enjoy weekly guided reading. This is where we get to read in a group and talk about different books. Please record all home reading in children’s reading diaries.
Homework in Year 2
This Year your child’s homework will always be brought home on a Friday. Children must hand their homework into their teacher by the following Wednesday, so that it can be marked ready for the next piece to be set. Homework will be English one week and Maths the next. However sometimes there may be a topic link as well. Homework will be differentiated so that all children feel comfortable with what they are able to achieve. Please make sure your child completes their homework on their own so that we can assess what they have understood (reading homework to children is absolutely fine!) All homework should be completed in pencil. Spellings will also come home on a Friday and children will be tested the following Friday. If you have trouble accessing My Maths homework at home Mrs Holden White will be continuing her My Maths club on a Wednesday lunchtime, where your child can come along to complete homework.
Helping in Year 2
If you would be interested in helping to develop children’s reading skills across Year 2 and can come regularly into school on one afternoon please put your name down on the sign- up sheet outside Miss Perkins class. You will be provided with a quiet area outside of the classroom where you can listen to the children read and talk about likes, dislikes and puzzles within a book.
Please remember that our doors are always open so please do not hesitate to speak to me if you have any further questions or concerns.
