Children Encouraged to Get Active by Walking to School

Every morning, our pupils make their way into school. Some are given a lift by their parents, some use public transport, and some walk. Throughout October, we will be encouraging more children to take an early morning stroll as part of International Walk to School Month.

This special month is part of the Walk to School Campaign, which is run by the government-backed charity Living Streets. With roots that stretch as far back as 1929, Living Streets has long been striving to create a walking nation where people of all generations enjoy the benefits of walking and all streets are designed to be safe and fit for pedestrians.

At Southwold Primary School, we are fully behind the campaign, and we recognise the many benefits of swapping the roads for the pavements. It is crucially important for children to be active and get regular exercise. Walking to and from school every day is a great way to get the blood flowing and promote an active lifestyle.

The health benefits are complemented by the positive effect the change in routine will have on the planet. With more people walking to school, less cars are lining the roads and creating air pollutants that cause significant harm to the environment.

During this month, we are encouraging and reminding our pupils to walk to school as much as possible. Assembly time has been dedicated to highlighting the importance of regular exercise as well walking to school, and class competitions are being held to see who walks to school the most.

Mrs Wollington, Principal, said: “Walking to school is a great way to incorporate exercise into daily life. The children are very keen to see who walks to school the most, which helps to motivate and encourage them even more.”

As as school, we are committed to teaching our pupils about the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle and the impact they can have on the environment. By taking part in International Walk to School Month, they will be improving their own futures as well as the planet’s.
