Welcome to Mrs Hooton’s Class Page. Here you will find all the information you may require linked to what will be happening in Fern Class. Our class team is made up of Mrs Hooton, and our teaching assistants, Miss Miles, Mrs Stirrat and Mrs Perks and 1:1 support will be delivered by Mrs White, Mrs Morgan, Mrs Springett and Mrs Sawyer. We all look after each other in Year 1 & 2 and make sure that we are always busy learning with lots of laughter along the way. It is important to us that we support each other in class so that everyone feels valued and special.
Children in Year 1 & 2 are expected to come into the classroom independently; our team will ensure children are given help to put their belongings away if needed. Please drop your child off at their classroom door (facing onto the playground) and collect them at the end of the day from their classroom door. It is important that your child arrives on time in the morning (8.45) because once the children are in class they will be given a learning task to complete until register time. The morning learning tasks will encourage vital life skills such as problem solving and team work.
We enjoy daily morning phonics sessions using the Read, Write, Inc scheme (please see link to Year 1 & 2 Phonics) and also take part in Guided Reading, Maths and Literacy lessons every morning. Literacy (Including Guided Reading, Handwriting and Phonics) and Maths sessions will be streamed across the Key Stage 1 teachers. This will allow for correctly pitched and differentiated lessons for the range of ages and abilities in our classes. These lessons have been carefully planned to ensure that your child will be getting the best provision and teaching and learning opportunities for them. Our afternoons involve being creative in art and design, finding out about different topics and also getting physical in PE. We like visiting the Computing suite each week, learning to speak French, experimenting in Science, learning to play musical instruments and singing songs.
Please can all children have their book bag in school every day. Book bags will be kept in children’s drawers. Any fruit snacks for playtimes will need to be put on the lunch time trolley/snack tray. Children will require their PE kit in school every day; if you would like to take it home each Friday for it to be washed please ensure it is back in school on the Monday.
In Year 1 & 2 we just love to read (please see link to reading strategies and independent reading at home). We have a coloured book band system, which has a range of books for us to enjoy. All the books involve different characters, settings and plots. It’s really important that we read these books at least three times before changing them with Mrs Hooton. If your child is on Purple band or above, once is sufficient as long as they have answered a range of comprehension questions. We also enjoy weekly guided reading. This is where we get to read in a group and talk about different books. Please record all home reading in children’s reading diaries.
Within the first week of each new topic a takeaway homework sheet will be sent home in your child’s homework book. The takeaway homework will allow your child the freedom to choose the difficulty and challenge of their homework for that week. Each mini project has a challenge chilli rating which indicates the amount of effort and time it will need. However, one extra hot challenge must be completed every half term. The mini projects are all linked to topic and mostly have a literacy or numeracy focus. Your child will have a takeaway homework loyalty card which will be stamped by their teacher when a complete piece of homework has been brought in. When your child has 4 stamps they will receive a raffle prize. Children must hand their homework into their teacher every Monday. As always, please read with your child as often as possible. Please see homework link for takeaway homework.
This year we are excited about exploring and developing new topics and taking part in a range of interesting projects. Each term we will be sending home a topic overview which will outline which topic we will be covering and what kind of things we will be doing in school with the children. Copies of all letters sent home will be available on the school website and also this webpage. Watch this space for future topics!
If you would be interested in helping to develop children’s reading skills across Year 1 & 2 and can come regularly into school on one afternoon please put your name down on the sign- up sheet outside Mrs Hooton class. You will be provided with a quiet area outside of the classroom where you can listen to the children read and talk about likes, dislikes and puzzles within a book.
