Hello and a warm welcome to Fern Class Page from Mrs Andrea Hooton
Welcome to Mrs Hooton’s Class Page. Here you will find all the information you may require linked to what will be happening in Fern Class. Our class team is made up of Mrs Hooton, and our teaching assistants Mrs Hine and Mrs Wills, with 1:1 support delivered by Mrs Cladingboel. We all look after each other in Year 1 and make sure that we are always busy learning with fun and happiness along the way. It is important to us that we support each other in class so that everyone feels valued and special.
Children in Year 1 are expected to come into the classroom independently; our team will ensure children are given help to put their belongings away if needed. Please drop your child off at their cloakroom door (facing onto the playground) and collect them at the end of the day from their classroom door. It is important that your child arrives on time in the morning (8.45a.m.) because once the children are in class they will be given a learning task to complete until register time. The morning learning tasks will encourage vital life skills such as problem solving, communication, independence and team work.
We enjoy daily Maths, Literacy and Guided Reading lessons every morning and our Phonics sessions in the afternoon follow the Read, Write, Inc scheme. Our afternoons involve exploring our topics through experimenting in Science, learning about History, Geography and R.E., and visiting the Computing suite each week. We like being creative in art and design, and also getting physical in PE. We also enjoy learning to speak French with Madame Holliday and learning to play musical instruments and sing songs with Mr Callery.
Book bags must be in school every day and are kept in children’s drawers. Any fruit snacks or water bottles for play times need to be clearly named and put in the snack tray. Children require their PE kit in school every day; if you would like to take it home each Friday to be washed please ensure it is back in school on the Monday. Indoor PE is first thing Monday morning and outdoor PE is first thing Friday morning.
Reading in Year 1
In Year 1 we love to read. We have a coloured book band system, which has a range of books (Fiction, non-fiction, Poetry and Plays) for us to enjoy. Please record all home reading in children’s reading diaries. All the books involve different characters, settings and plots. It’s really important that we read these books at least three times before changing them with Mrs Hooton. If your child is on Purple band or above, once is sufficient as long as they have answered a range of comprehension questions. We also enjoy weekly guided reading. This is when we read in a group and ask and answer questions about the plot, setting and characters or discuss a range of information texts.
Homework in Year 1
Within the first week of each new topic a takeaway homework menu will be sent home in your child’s homework book. The takeaway homework will allow your child the freedom to choose the difficulty and challenge of their homework for that week. Each mini project has a challenge chilli rating which indicates the amount of effort and time it will need. However, one extra hot challenge must be completed every half term. The mini projects are all linked to topic and mostly have a literacy or numeracy focus. Your child will have a takeaway homework loyalty card which will be stamped by their teacher when a complete piece of homework has been brought in. When your child has 4 stamps they will receive a raffle prize. Children must hand their homework into their teacher every Monday. As always, please read with your child as often as possible.
Topics for 2016-17
This year we are excited about exploring and developing new topics and taking part in a range of interesting projects. Each term we will be sending home a topic overview which will outline which topic we will be covering and what kind of things we will be doing in school with the children. Copies of all letters sent home will be available on the school website and also this webpage. Watch this space for future topics!
Helping in Year 1
If you would be interested in helping to develop children’s reading skills across Year 1 and can come regularly into school on one afternoon please let Mrs Hooton know. You will be provided with a quiet area outside of the classroom where you can listen to the children read and talk about likes, dislikes and puzzles within a book.
Any questions or concerns please pop in and see me. Thank you for your continued support, Mrs Hooton.
